KINGSPORT, TENN. – For the seventh consecutive year, Kingsport City Schools (KCS) has achieved the top composite score of 5 in Tennessee Value Added Assessment System (TVAAS) based on data released by the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE). For the 2022-23 school year, Kingsport City Schools scored a Level 5 in the areas of system-wide numeracy, system-wide science, system-wide social studies, and the overall system-wide composite score. John Adams Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Elementary, Andrew Johnson Elementary, and Dobyns-Bennett High School also received a top composite score of 5.

"I am very proud of the work our students and staff invested to earn Level 5 status for our district," said KCS Superintendent Dr. Chris Hampton. "I also want to celebrate our schools that met or significantly met the growth expectations for those individual schools. We especially elevate John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Johnson, and Dobyns-Bennett for earning individual Level 5 scores."

TVAAS measures student growth year over year, regardless of whether the student is proficient on the state assessment. In calculating a TVAAS score, a student’s performance is compared relative to the performance of his or her peers who have performed similarly on past assessments. A Level 5 TVAAS score is “most effective,” according to the TDOE which means there is “significant evidence that the district’s students made more growth than expected.”

Kingsport City Schools (KCS) is a public school district located in Kingsport, Tenn., serving students in Sullivan and Hawkins county. The district is comprised of 13 schools, including a Pre-K, eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, a high school program of choice, and an alternative learning program; with a total enrollment of over 7,900 students. 

KCS has been ranked the "#1 Best Place to Teach in Tennessee" by the 2023 NICHE Best Schools Ranking and the City of Kingsport has been voted as the "Nicest Places in America" in the October 2022 Reader's Digest.
