Welcome to Andrew Johnson Elementary School. It is my hope that this web site will provide you with an overview of our school. I encourage you to contact us personally if you have questions or would like more specific information. I would like to share some information about my background so we can begin to get to know each other a little better. I attained my bachelor’s degree in elementary education from East Tennessee State University. From there, I began my professional career working at Johnson, where I taught third grade and fifth grade. While teaching, I earned a master’s degree in education from Cumberland University. I also worked as the Assistant to the Principal at Johnson for two years and served in that same role at Sevier Middle School for two years. While working at the middle school level, I earned a specialist’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University. I have served as the principal at John F. Kennedy Elementary from 2009-2012, and have had the honor of serving as the principal at Johnson since August of 2012.
At Johnson we realize that our greatest asset is our school culture which is defined by our interactions with our families, students, community members and each other. We see ourselves as learners first and foremost. We believe this model of collaboration and continuous improvement is essential to our success. Leadership is also a key component of what makes our school a great place to learn and grow. We encourage our students to see themselves as leaders who can make a difference. We understand that leadership can take many different forms, and it is our goal to help each child to recognize and act upon his/her leadership potential. Johnson Elementary is designated as one of 2,500 Leader in Me Schools throughout the globe.
Johnson Elementary School has an enrollment of approximately 550 students in grades PK - 5. The average class size is about 20 students. Our faculty and staff consists of almost 80 adults that have made it their mission to positively impact the lives of children. In most cases, we have 4 classroom teachers at each grade level. We have specialists in the areas of art, library, music, and physical education. Support services include a school guidance counselor, special education teachers, speech therapist, and a full-time nurse. Our faculty is supported by a large staff of instructional assistants, school nutrition workers, and custodians.
The support and involvement of the family is critically important in a child’s success in school. We value our families as our partners and encourage participation in our PTO and special activities like our Thanksgiving luncheon during the first semester and Field Day during the second semester. As a parent, I have learned that parenting is the toughest, but most rewarding job in the world. You can count on the faculty and staff of this fine school to partner with you on this journey. Thank you for entrusting us with that which is most precious to you on this earth…your children. We will work hard to prove ourselves worthy of this trust.
