KINGSPORT, TENN. – Andrew Johnson Elementary School has been selected as the recipient of a $3,500 Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant to support the creation and expansion of its school gardening program. Johnson Elementary School’s proposal was one of just a few chosen from more than 1,000 applications submitted across the United States and Canada. In addition to the Garden Grant, Johnson Elementary was also selected to receive an additional $1,000 monetary award from Newman’s Own Foundation.
"We are incredibly honored to receive the Whole Kids Garden Grant and additional support from Newman’s Own Foundation," said Brett Herron, Johnson Elementary Principal. "This opportunity will allow our students to engage in hands-on learning, develop a deeper connection to nature, and grow both plants and a sense of responsibility. We are grateful for the support and excited to see the positive impact this will have on our school community."
The Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant Program is dedicated to improving children’s nutrition and wellness by supporting hands-on garden projects in schools. The funding will help Johnson Elementary enhance its outdoor learning opportunities, teaching students where their food comes from while nurturing healthy habits, environmental stewardship, and science-based learning.
"This grant will be a huge help to jumpstart the school’s garden and allow it to grow vegetables to benefit the students,” said Sharon Hayes, Keep Kingsport Beautiful Director. “I am happy we were able to partner with Johnson Elementary School, and I look forward to our continued working relationship in the years to come."
The additional monetary award from Newman’s Own Foundation recognizes the school’s commitment to enriching the lives of students through meaningful, community-driven programs. While not required, Johnson Elementary may also have future opportunities to engage with Newman’s Own Foundation on other initiatives.
